What Is Gothic Text?

Gothic text is lettering in the style of blackletter, the dense, angular script used across Europe from roughly the 12th century and later in the first printed books, including the Gutenberg Bible. In English it is often called Old English text, and the German form Fraktur stayed in everyday print until the mid-20th century. Today the look is used for tattoos, band and streetwear logos, gaming names and, every October, Halloween designs.

This gothic text generator gives you two ways to get it. The font grid above renders your words in 27 real gothic and horror fonts, so you can download a high-resolution PNG. How to Use the Gothic Text Generator

1. Type or paste your text into the box. The live preview updates as you type.

Halloween Gothic Text: Fonts, Frames and Ideas

Halloween is when gothic lettering gets its biggest audience, and it is the busiest time of year for any gothic text generator. For party invites, posters and YouTube or TikTok thumbnails, use the Halloween Horror filter: Creepster, Nosifer and Eater give dripping, scratched and decayed letters, while Butcherman and Jolly Lodger lean more playful. Pair them with the Pumpkin or Blood preset and download a PNG.

The Haunted and Cursed styles stack combining marks on each letter for a glitchy, possessed look. Use them for one or two words only, because heavy marks can overlap nearby lines and are hard to read.

The 27 Gothic Fonts, by Style

Halloween Horror

Creepster, Nosifer, Eater, Butcherman, Jolly Lodger, Griffy, Rubik Wet Paint, Mystery Quest, Frijole and Henny Penny. These are display fonts built for spooky titles: dripping paint, splatters, cracked and hand-cut letters. Keep them large and short.

Old English (Blackletter)

UnifrakturMaguntia, UnifrakturCook, Grenze Gotisch, Pirata One, Fruktur, Texturina and Germania One. UnifrakturMaguntia and UnifrakturCook are digital revivals of historic Fraktur type, and they are the closest match to classic Old English tattoo and newspaper-masthead lettering.

Medieval

MedievalSharp, Uncial Antiqua, Almendra Display, Cinzel Decorative and IM Fell English SC. These suit fantasy maps, game titles, Renaissance faire signs and book covers. Uncial Antiqua is based on uncial script, an older and rounder style that came before blackletter.

Metal and Gaming

Metal Mania, New Rocker, Rubik Glitch, Jacquard 24 and Jacquarda Bastarda 9. Metal Mania and New Rocker give the sharp, aggressive look of heavy metal logos. The two Jacquard fonts are pixel blackletter, which works well for retro and gaming designs.

Gothic Text in Unicode: Why Some Letters Look Different

Copy-and-paste gothic text uses the Mathematical Fraktur and Mathematical Bold Fraktur characters from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block of the Unicode Standard. They were added for mathematicians, which is why they look the same in almost every app and why no separate "gothic font" needs to be installed.

Five regular Fraktur capitals are missing from that block because they had already been encoded earlier as letterlike symbols: ℭ, ℌ, ℑ, ℜ and ℨ (C, H, I, R and Z). The generator swaps them in automatically. On some phones these five render in a slightly different weight from their neighbours. Bold Fraktur has no gaps, so 𝕭𝖔𝖑𝖉 is the safer choice if a word contains C, H, I, R or Z.

Tips for Readable Gothic Lettering

• Avoid all caps. Blackletter capitals are ornate and hard to read in a row. Capitalize only the first letter of each word.
• Keep it short. Gothic and horror fonts are display faces. Use them for names, titles and a few words, not paragraphs.
• Give it contrast. Dense letterforms blur on busy backgrounds. Use a solid preset or a transparent PNG over a dark, simple image.
• Size up. Thin hairlines in Fraktur disappear when small. Use at least 40px for images.

Gothic Text and Accessibility

Screen readers read Unicode gothic characters by their names, so ℌ𝔢𝔩𝔩𝔬 may be announced as "mathematical fraktur capital H" letter by letter, or skipped. WebAIM's screen reader guide explains how these tools handle text. Use gothic text for decoration, and keep names you want people to find, links and important information in plain text. A PNG with good alt text is the more accessible option for headings in posts and on websites.

Using These Fonts Commercially

All 27 fonts are served from Google Fonts, which publishes fonts under open-source licenses, mostly the SIL Open Font License. That license allows personal and commercial use, including logos, merchandise and printed products. Check each font's page on Google Fonts for its exact license before a large commercial run. Unicode gothic characters are standard text characters, so they are not owned by any font designer.
